Inter Miami CF has announced that head coach Javier Mascherano has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons for his departure. This significant change comes as the team is navigating the 2026 Major League Soccer season, currently holding a 3-1-3 record and sitting third in the Eastern Conference.
Mascherano's Departure and Legacy
Mascherano, who previously played alongside Lionel Messi for Barcelona and the Argentine national team, took over as Inter Miami's coach and reunited with Messi. His tenure saw the club reach the knockout stage of the Club World Cup and the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The club expressed gratitude for his contributions, acknowledging his place in the team's history.
His coaching staff has also departed the club. During his time, Mascherano's regular-season and playoff record with Inter Miami stood at 27-9-11. His exit follows a similar pattern to his predecessor, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who also cited personal reasons when he stepped down in November 2024.
Guillermo Hoyos Appointed New Head Coach
Taking the helm as the new head coach is Guillermo Hoyos, another Argentine with strong ties to Barcelona and Lionel Messi. Hoyos is recognized for his role in discovering Messi at Barcelona’s youth academy and is known for his early belief in Messi's potential.
This appointment brings a unique dynamic to Inter Miami, leveraging Hoyos's deep understanding of Messi's development and career. The club is optimistic that this new leadership will help them achieve greater success and build upon past accomplishments.
Organizational Changes and Future Outlook
In addition to the coaching change, Alberto Marrero, the chief soccer officer, will now also serve as sporting director, a role previously held by Hoyos. This strategic reshuffling indicates a broader re-evaluation within the organization as they aim to strengthen their position.
The club is facing a period of transition, further compounded by the recent retirement of former teammate Jordi Alba. Despite these shifts, Inter Miami is focused on adapting to the new leadership and maintaining momentum throughout the season. Managing owner Jorge Mas conveyed his appreciation for Mascherano's service and wished him well for the future.
