Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse demonstrated excellent form with a win in the 200-meter race at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on Sunday, marking a strong start to his 2024 season.

De Grasse's Impressive Performance

The seven-time Olympic medalist won the men’s 200m in 19.84 seconds, his quickest time in the event since a 19.76-second run at the end of the 2023 season. Fellow Canadian Aaron Brown finished second in the 200m with a time of 20.07 seconds.

De Grasse also competed in the 100m, finishing second to Kenya’s Ferdinand Ominyala. He recorded a time of 9.95 seconds, his fastest 100m time since winning bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he ran a personal best of 9.89 seconds.

“Nice way to open up the season running some strong times,” De Grasse stated after the event.

Blake Sets Personal Best

A Breakthrough Performance

Jerome Blake, from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal milestone by winning the 100-meter race in 9.93 seconds. This new personal best highlights the growing strength of Canadian sprinting.

Looking Ahead to the World Relays and Beyond

De Grasse’s focus now shifts to the upcoming World Relays, where he will team up with his Canadian teammates. The Botswana Golden Grand Prix served as a key event for athletes to assess their current form and prepare for major competitions.

The success of De Grasse and Brown in the 200m, combined with Blake’s 100m victory, underscores the potential of Canadian sprinting on the international stage. Athletes are also preparing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, with Aaron Brown already discussing his aspirations for the Games.

Recent successes at the Kip Keino Classic, where Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg defended their hammer throw titles, further demonstrate the versatility of Canadian athletes.
