Rasmus Dahlin, Gabriel Landeskog, and Jonathan Toews have been nominated for the prestigious Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award recognizes perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport of ice hockey.
The Bill Masterton Trophy
Presented annually by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy honors players who demonstrate exceptional character and resilience while overcoming significant adversity. It celebrates not only on-ice performance but also the qualities of perseverance and sportsmanship.
Rasmus Dahlin (Buffalo Sabres)
Rasmus Dahlin, a 26-year-old defenseman, recorded a career-high 74 points this season for the Buffalo Sabres. His accomplishments came amidst a deeply challenging personal time.
Prior to the season, Dahlin’s fiancée, Carolina Matovac, suffered life-threatening heart failure, requiring intensive care and a heart transplant. The couple also experienced the loss of their unborn child. Dahlin took a leave of absence to support Matovac, demonstrating a commitment to family. Matovac’s recovery and return to Buffalo inspired Dahlin to continue performing at a high level.
Gabriel Landeskog (Colorado Avalanche)
Gabriel Landeskog, the 33-year-old captain of the Colorado Avalanche, missed three full seasons due to a persistent knee injury. He initially played through the injury during the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup victory.
In 2023, Landeskog underwent a groundbreaking knee cartilage replacement surgery, becoming the first NHL player to attempt a return after this procedure. His successful rehabilitation and return to the lineup during the 2025 playoffs showcase his unwavering determination.
Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg Jets)
Jonathan Toews, 38, made a remarkable comeback to the NHL after a two-and-a-half-year absence due to health issues, including long COVID and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
Toews rejoined the Winnipeg Jets, contributing 11 goals and 29 points in 82 games. He has openly discussed his health challenges and the importance of prioritizing well-being, offering a message of hope to others.
The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association will announce the winner of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy at the end of the season, recognizing the player who best embodies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
