The Milwaukee Brewers have announced a series of roster moves, promoting utility player Tyler Black from Triple-A and recalling left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan.

Black Receives Third Major League Opportunity

This is Tyler Black’s third attempt to establish himself in the majors, following brief appearances with the Brewers in both 2024 and 2025. The 25-year-old will look to prove his worth at the highest level.

Roster Adjustments Made

To make room for Black and Drohan, right-handed pitcher Carlos Rodriguez was optioned back to Triple-A. Outfielder Luis Matos was also designated for assignment, opening up a roster spot.

Black's Performance and Potential

Black has shown encouraging signs in Triple-A this season, maintaining a .282 batting average with one home run and six RBIs in 10 games. However, his performance in the World Baseball Classic in March was less impressive, with a .100 average in four games while representing Canada.

Throughout 23 career major league games, Black has a .211/.357/.263 slash line, demonstrating a strong ability to get on base with three stolen bases and three doubles. He boasts an exceptional 17.1% walk rate, significantly above the league average.

Addressing Defensive Versatility

A key challenge for Black is establishing defensive proficiency. While he has experience at multiple positions in the minor leagues, his major league appearances have been primarily at first base and as a designated hitter.

Player and Manager Perspectives

Black acknowledged the difficulties of frequent roster moves, stating, “It’s been a really small sample, and the biggest thing for me is not looking too much into it. It’s tough being up and down a lot of times, for a lot of guys. But I’m continuing to show up with my process. Get better every year and learn.”

Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed confidence in Black’s potential in February, stating, “Black has enough power to be an everyday player, there’s no doubt. But how that comes out, it’s all about how he develops as a hitter. We he has it in there.”

Looking Ahead

The Brewers will closely monitor Black’s performance, focusing on his offensive contributions and defensive capabilities. The designation of Luis Matos signals the team’s willingness to make tough decisions to create opportunities for players with perceived higher potential. This call-up represents a crucial opportunity for Black to demonstrate his value to the Brewers.
