Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced a series of injury updates on Monday, ahead of the team’s game against the L.A. Dodgers at Rogers Centre. The most significant news concerned All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk, who will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken left thumb.

Kirk's Injury and Recovery Timeline

Kirk sustained the injury on Friday during a game against the Chicago White Sox when struck by a foul tip. Manager Schneider estimated a recovery period of three to six weeks for the valuable catcher. The team will rely on Tyler Heineman and rookie Brandon Valenzuela in Kirk’s absence.

Additional Injury Concerns

Adding to the Blue Jays’ woes, right-handed pitcher Cody Ponce, who suffered a sprained anterior cruciate ligament on March 30th, is scheduled for a doctor’s appointment in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He is already on the 60-day injured list.

Barger and Yesavage Updates

Outfielder Addison Barger is also dealing with injuries to both ankles, sustained while running out a ground ball on Sunday. The team is evaluating the extent of his injuries. Pitcher Trey Yesavage is progressing well with his shoulder impingement and is scheduled to start in the Single-A Florida State League on Thursday.

Growing List of Sidelined Players

The Blue Jays currently have a half-dozen major league pitchers sidelined, including Ponce, Yesavage, José Berríos, Shane Bieber, Yimi Garcia, and Bowden Francis. They are also without their starting catcher, Kirk, and outfielder Anthony Santander.

Schneider Remains Optimistic

Despite the challenges, Schneider acknowledged the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere and expressed optimism about the remainder of the season. He emphasized the need for contributions from players who will have increased opportunities due to the injuries.
