The Colorado Avalanche completed a first-round playoff sweep of the Los Angeles Kings with a 5-1 victory in Game 4, bringing an end to the career of Kings captain Anze Kopitar.
Avalanche Dominate Series
Nathan MacKinnon led the Avalanche with two goals and an assist, while Nicolas Roy and Devon Toews added crucial third-period goals. This propelled the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche to a decisive win in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup playoff series.
Cale Makar also contributed with a goal, and Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves to secure the victory. The Avalanche showcased their roster-wide talent and depth throughout the series.
End of an Era for Kopitar
The game marked the end of an era for the Kings, as captain Anze Kopitar played his final NHL game following his retirement announcement in September. Kopitar, a two-time Selke Trophy winner, was instrumental in the Kings’ Stanley Cup wins in 2012 and 2014.
The Los Angeles crowd showed their appreciation, chanting “Kopi” throughout the game. Avalanche players warmly greeted Kopitar during the postgame handshake line, and he took a final lap around the ice to acknowledge the tribute.
Avalanche Advance, Kings Eliminated
With the series win, the Avalanche advance to the second round, where they will face the winner of the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild series. They will have at least five days of rest before their next game.
The Kings’ fifth consecutive playoff appearance ended in disappointment, marking their eighth straight postseason loss and seventh consecutive first-round exit since their 2012 Stanley Cup victory.
MacKinnon Breaks Through
The Avalanche finally capitalized on the power play in Game 4, with MacKinnon scoring his first goal of the playoffs on a one-timer. This ended Colorado’s 0-for-9 start on the man advantage. Makar added a goal with a wrist shot in the second period.
Despite a goal from Joel Edmundson, the Kings couldn’t overcome the Avalanche’s offensive pressure. MacKinnon sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, bringing his career playoff goal total to 57 in 99 games.
