Anze Kopitar Announces Retirement After 20 Seasons
Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar concluded his distinguished 20-year NHL career following a first-round playoff series loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Slovenian star received a moving farewell from both fans and teammates, marking the end of an era for the Kings organization.
A Heartfelt Farewell at Crypto.com Arena
At the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, Kopitar skated to center ice, acknowledging the standing ovation with a raised arm. His teammates showed their respect by emphatically tapping their sticks on the ice before accompanying him off the ice for the final time.
Reflections on a Legendary Career
From Teenager to Captain
“It was hard to keep it together, really,” Kopitar said. “Being here for 20 years, more than half of my lifetime, it’s extremely special. I really appreciate the fans.” Arriving in Los Angeles as a young player from Slovenia, Kopitar ultimately became the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, assists, and total points.
Two-Time Stanley Cup Champion
Kopitar’s career was highlighted by two Stanley Cup championships, secured in 2012 and 2014. He also served as the team’s captain for ten years, solidifying his position as a beloved figure in Southern California sports.
Bittersweet Ending and Future Plans
Despite the disappointing end to the season, Kopitar expressed gratitude for his time with the Kings. “It’s very bittersweet, for sure,” he stated, with his children nearby. “There’s going to be some tears, yes, but that’s the way life goes, right? It’s a circle.”
Kopitar acknowledged the difficult playoff series, stating, “Not the way we wanted to go out, but it happened, and we’ve got to live with it.” He plans to return to Slovenia with his family, allowing his children to pursue their passions in hockey and figure skating.
Statistical Legacy and Impact
Throughout his 20 seasons, Kopitar played in a franchise-record 1,521 games, recording 864 assists and 1,316 points. He surpassed Marcel Dionne as the Kings’ all-time leading scorer last month. He also holds the franchise record for overtime points (34) and game-winning goals (79).
Teammate Tributes
Drew Doughty, Kopitar’s teammate since 2008, struggled to find the words to express the impact of Kopitar’s departure. “He had an unbelievable career,” Doughty said. “He means so much to this organization. It’s going to be tough without him.”
Colorado Avalanche players also showed their respect, with Brent Burns calling Kopitar a “special guy on and off the ice.”
