The station utilizes massive antennas, including a 16.5-meter dish and an 11-meter dish, to relay essential telemetry and command data.

The necessity for this rebuild stems from the catastrophic impact of Super Typhoon Mawar in late May 2023. The storm's intensity was enough to demolish two of the station's three primary large antennas and cripple local communications.
In the immediate aftermath of the storm, NASA's emergency response teams worked to maintain a baseline of service. To prevent a total blackout, the agency erected temporary repair facilities and utilized mobile relay units borrowed from the U.S. Army. These measures allowed for partial service to be restored in time to support the November 2023 Extravehicular Activity (EVA).

While temporary measures kept missions afloat, the station's full capabilities were not restored until after Congress allocated disaster-relief funds in early 2025. This funding enabled an intensive eighteen-month rebuilding and hardening program.
