Telus World of Science Edmonton (TWOSE) has unveiled a new interactive exhibition dedicated to exploring the science of dogs. The exhibit delves into how dogs think, communicate, and perceive the world.
Exploring the Canine World
“Dogs! A Science Tail” traces the evolutionary history of dogs, from their wolf ancestors to their current roles as companions. The exhibit examines canine cognition, communication, and sensory perception.
Human-Dog Co-Evolution
The exhibition thoughtfully examines the complex relationship between humans and dogs, highlighting the concept of co-evolution. Science Director Trevor Prentice explained that selective breeding, while enhancing desired traits, has sometimes led to genetic health challenges in certain breeds.
The exhibit acknowledges the ethical implications of influencing canine evolution and emphasizes the importance of responsible breeding practices.
Interactive Experiences
Visitors can test their physical abilities against those of different dog breeds using a dedicated sensor station. Guests run a short track, and their speed is compared to average canine speeds.
Trevor Prentice discovered he runs at approximately 14 kilometres per hour, comparable to an average Pomeranian. Kyla Amrhein, the centre’s marketing director, emphasized the exhibit’s focus on understanding our responsibilities towards canine well-being.
“Dogs! A Science Tail” officially opened to the public on Saturday and promises a fun and educational experience for all ages. Dogs are not permitted inside the exhibit for the safety of all attendees.
