Scientists have identified a new tiger cat species, Leopardus tilcayo, within the mist-filled Yungas forest of Bolivia. This finding represents the first formal description of a new feline species in over 100 years.
The 1.4 million-year-old lineage of the Tilcayo
DNA analysis of 38 tiger cats, collected from both museum specimens and field studies across South America, has revealed that the tiger cat group is far more genetically complex than previously understood. The research, published in the journal Current Biology, indicates that what was once considered a single species actually comprises five distinct lineages.
One of these newly identified lineages, the Leopardus tilcayo, is estimated to have diverged from its closest relatives approximately 1.4 million years ago. The study was led by National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz and evolutionary biologist Jonas Lescroart, who utilized genetic tools to unravel the cryptic nature of these animals.. According to the report, these cats are notoriously difficult to distinguish based on physical appearance alone.
An 18-inch feline smaller than a house cat
The Leopardus tilcayo is a diminutive predator, measuring roughly 18 inches in length and weighing approximately 3 pounds. This makes the species significantly smaller than the average domestic cat. The feline possesses muted brown fur marked by irregular rosettes and is primarily nocturnal, a behavior confirmed by camera-trap data.
The research involved unique specimens, including two individuals sourced from the Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary. The discovery underscores the risk that many species may go extinct before they are even formally recognized by science.
The unknown status of the Peruvian antisuyo subspecies
The research also identified a new subspecies in Peru's Yungas , named Leopardus tigrinus antisuyo in honor of the ancient Inca region of Antisuyu.. This expansion of the tiger cat family tree suggests that the biological diversity of the Andean cloud forests is much deeper than current maps indicate.
However, several questions remain regarding the management of these newly identified groups. It is currently unclear how the specific conservation status of the Peruvian antisuyo subspecies will be prioritized compared to the Bolivian Leopardus tilcayo, or how many other undiscovered lineages might still be hiding within the fragmented forest patches of South America.
