White House Correspondents' Dinner Attack: Suspect in Custody

Cole Allen, a 31-year-old computer scientist from Torrance, California, was arrested after attempting to attack the White House Correspondents' Dinner. President Donald Trump described Allen as a “very sick person.” The incident has prompted concerns regarding security measures and mental health support.

Suspect Background and Travel

Allen, a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills (May 2025 commencement programme), previously worked as a teacher and was named ‘Teacher of the Month’ in late 2024. He travelled to Washington, D.C. by train from Los Angeles, via Chicago, and checked into the Washington Hilton the day before the attack.

Manifesto and Weapons

Investigators discovered a written manifesto authored by Allen, in which he referred to himself as the ‘Friendly Federal Assassin.’ The document detailed a plan to target administration officials, specifying the use of buckshot “to minimise casualties through walls.” Allen shared portions of this manifesto with family members prior to the incident.

He legally purchased a .38-calibre pistol in 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun in 2025 from stores in southern California.

The Attack and Response

On the night of the gala, Allen reportedly attempted to breach a magnetometer screening area while armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. A security officer was shot at close range but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest.

Investigation and Motives

The FBI is reviewing Allen’s social media accounts, which contain anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric. However, President Trump stated that law enforcement believes Allen acted as a “lone wolf.” Allen is currently undergoing evaluation at a hospital and is expected to face federal charges on Monday.

Aftermath and Calls for Review

The White House Correspondents' Dinner, an annual event celebrating press freedom, was immediately halted and attendees were evacuated. President Trump, who was not in attendance, condemned the attack and emphasized the importance of unity.

Lawmakers are calling for a review of security protocols at high-profile events. Mental health advocates are also highlighting the need for improved support systems to identify and assist individuals exhibiting extreme ideologies.

Allen’s family has expressed shock and sorrow, cooperating fully with authorities by providing access to his writings and communications. Federal agents are continuing to investigate his background for potential motives or connections to extremist groups.
