Trump Attacks Prince Harry Over Ukraine and NATO Remarks
Former US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Prince Harry after the Duke of Sussex called for the United States to uphold its commitments to Ukraine and NATO amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Disparaging Remarks and Questioned Authority
Trump dismissed Harry’s counsel as unsolicited, asserting he believes he represents the interests of the United Kingdom more effectively than the royal prince. He made these comments while speaking at the White House. The former president also used the opportunity to reiterate his critical stance towards Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle.
Upcoming State Visit with King Charles III
Despite his criticism, Trump expressed anticipation for welcoming his ‘friend,’ King Charles III, during the upcoming state visit with Queen Camilla. He believes the visit has the potential to “absolutely” repair strained relations with the UK, which have been impacted by disagreements over the Iran issue.
Prince Harry’s Call for American Leadership
Prince Harry made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Thursday, addressing the Kyiv Security Forum. He emphasized the necessity of ‘American leadership’ in the Russia-Ukraine war. He specifically urged the US to ‘honour its international treaty obligations,’ referencing NATO, and its ‘enduring role in global security.’
Trump's Response
Trump responded to Harry’s speech with sarcasm, stating, “I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that’s for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry.” He added that he “appreciates his advice very much. It’s great advice.”
Remarks on Meghan Markle
Trump also inquired about Meghan Markle’s well-being, asking reporters, “How’s he doing? How’s his wife? Please give her my regards.”
Harry's Position in Kyiv
During his speech in Kyiv, Harry positioned himself not as a politician but as “a soldier who understands service” and a “humanitarian.” He emphasized America’s historical role in guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty after it relinquished its nuclear weapons. He passionately called for an end to the war, accusing Russia of widespread atrocities and urging President Putin to halt the conflict.
Previous Visits to Ukraine
Harry’s visit, his third to Ukraine since the war began, followed a tour of Australia with Meghan Markle and a brief transit through the UK.
