President Donald Trump has criticized a federal magistrate judge in Washington, D.C., for apologizing to Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
Judge's Apology to Suspect
During a hearing on May 4, Judge Zia M. Faruqui expressed regret for the way Allen had been treated while detained. Faruqui apologized for Allen being held in a 'safe cell' that amounted to near-solitary confinement, stating, 'He's been treated differently than anyone I've ever observed.'
Trump's Response
President Trump called out Judge Faruqui for the apology, emphasizing that the suspect should not be treated with such leniency. The judge also mentioned that this was not the jail's first encounter with political violence.
Conditions of Detention
Judge Faruqui further noted that Allen should not be in solitary confinement and that the conditions of his detention were not as they were supposed to be. The judge's comments came during a hearing where the suspect's treatment in jail was a central topic.
