Secret Service agents fired five shots at Cole Tomas Allen during an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the incident and subsequent arrest.
Attempted Assassination at White House Dinner
The incident unfolded during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where Allen, 31, attempted to attack Trump. Agents fired five shots at Allen, but missed their target. One agent was struck in the chest but was protected by a bulletproof vest, preventing serious injury.
Suspect Apprehended and Charged
Cole Tomas Allen, who traveled from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. by train, was apprehended after tripping and falling while breaching a security checkpoint. He was found armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Allen is now facing multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the President.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Forensic analysis is underway to determine if Allen fired a shot that hit the Secret Service agent. Todd Blanche stated, “We want to get that right. So we’re still looking at that.” He also affirmed, “Law enforcement did not fail. They did exactly what they are trained to do.”
Charges and Potential Sentencing
In addition to attempted assassination, Allen is charged with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony and using a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment. He is also accused of sending a manifesto to family members before the attack, stating, “Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed. I’m not the person raped in a detention camp. I’m not the fisherman executed without trial.”
Allen appeared in court and claimed he had no drugs in his system. Donald Trump was evacuated to the White House following the incident and has expressed concerns about security at the hotel venue. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
