Reform UK has unveiled a plan to reshape the national curriculum in England, aiming to instill a stronger sense of British identity in schools if they win the upcoming general election.
Focus on British History and Identity
The proposals, announced ahead of St George’s Day, require all schools in England to prominently display a portrait of the King and fly the Union Jack. At the heart of the platform is a revised history curriculum designed to present a ‘patriotic’ account of Britain’s past.
Curriculum Details
The curriculum would dedicate at least 60% of classroom time to British history, covering pivotal events like the Magna Carta, the Wars of the Roses, the English Civil War, the Glorious Revolution, the Act of Union, the Enlightenment, and the Victorian era. Reform UK argues that current educational practices are influenced by ‘progressive’ ideologies, diminishing appreciation for British heritage.
Concerns Over National Pride
Suella Braverman, Reform’s education spokeswoman, has criticized previous governments for prioritizing a ‘mass migration agenda’ over national pride. She believes children are being taught to feel ‘ashamed’ of Britain’s history and aren’t learning about those who fought for freedom.
Survey Findings
A recent Policy Exchange survey revealed that only 20% of 18-24 year-olds hold a positive view of Winston Churchill. Additionally, only 41% of Gen Z (18-27 year-olds) express pride in their British identity. Reform UK believes a ‘true story’ of Britain, free from perceived bias, can address this decline.
Implementation and Scope
The plan includes enabling the establishment of new schools through the free school system to potentially implement the new curriculum more widely. While focused on England, the proposals acknowledge the distinct national identities of Scotland and Wales, allowing them to fly their flags and celebrate their national days alongside the core British-focused curriculum.
Reform UK intends to fund the installation of flagpoles in all schools, specifically for flying the Union Jack. Ms. Braverman stated that she would introduce a curriculum as Education Secretary to ‘rekindle national pride’ and instill a sense of ‘privilege’ in being British.
Political Momentum
This plan comes as Reform UK gains political momentum. A YouGov MRP poll predicts potential gains in upcoming local elections, particularly in London boroughs like Barking and Dagenham, Bromley, and Havering. Nigel Farage has expressed confidence in winning control of ‘half a dozen’ London boroughs.
