Cole Tomas Allen, accused of attempting to assassinate the President at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, appeared in court on Thursday.
First Court Appearance & Detention
Allen, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, made his first public appearance since his arraignment on Monday. He acknowledged Judge Moxila Upadhyaya with a ‘good morning’ and consented to remain in jail pending further proceedings.
His legal team requested Allen be moved from 24-hour solitary confinement, arguing he poses no immediate threat. Judge Upadhyaya advised them to file a formal motion regarding the issue.
Evidence Released: The Chilling Selfie
Federal prosecutors released a disturbing selfie taken by Allen in his hotel room shortly before the alleged attack. The image, timestamped 8:03 PM, shows Allen in evening attire equipped with a leather bag containing ammunition, a shoulder holster, a sheathed knife, pliers, and wire cutters.
Timeline of Events
The evidence indicates a premeditated act, with Allen searching the President’s schedule at 8:13 PM and viewing live video of Trump’s arrival at 8:27 PM. He then sent a confession email to family and friends at 8:30 PM.
Confrontation & Secret Service Response
Video footage released by the Washington Post shows Secret Service agents drawing their weapons within two seconds of Allen appearing on camera. The video does not show Allen firing his weapon, and no muzzle flash is visible.
Despite this, Allen has been charged with discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. The Secret Service defended its security protocols, stating they were ‘rigorously tested’ and ‘critical in mitigating the threat’.
Incident Details & Ongoing Investigation
The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton during a gala. Allen tripped and fell while Secret Service agents evacuated the President and Vice President. Guests dove under tables for cover.
The investigation is ongoing to determine if Allen fired the shot that struck a Secret Service agent, who was wearing a bulletproof vest and did not sustain serious injuries. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated forensic analysis is underway.
Allen faces a potential life sentence if convicted. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 11th.
