Cole Tomas Allen, accused of attempting to assassinate the President at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, appeared in court on Thursday.

First Court Appearance & Detention

Allen, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, appeared before Judge Moxila Upadhyaya and consented to remain in jail pending further proceedings. His legal team reserved the right to challenge his detention later.

Attorneys requested an end to Allen’s 24-hour solitary confinement, arguing he poses no threat to others. The judge advised them to file a formal motion regarding the housing issue.

Disturbing Evidence Released

Federal prosecutors released a chilling selfie taken by Allen shortly before the alleged attack. The image shows him in evening wear, equipped with a leather bag containing ammunition, a shoulder holster, a sheathed knife, pliers, and wire cutters.

Timeline of Events

The selfie was taken at 8:03 PM, minutes before Allen arrived at the Washington Hilton. He revisited the President’s schedule at 8:13 PM and monitored live video of Trump’s arrival at 8:27 PM. He then sent a confession email to family and friends at 8:30 PM.

Prosecutors revealed Allen was armed with seven knives during the attempted attack. He faces a potential life sentence if convicted.

Confrontation & Secret Service Response

Newly released video footage from the Washington Post shows Secret Service agents reacting within seconds of Allen appearing, discharging their firearms in his direction.

The video does not show Allen returning fire, and no muzzle flash is visible from his weapon. He tripped and fell at the top of a staircase.

The incident caused chaos at the Washington Hilton, with guests diving for cover as the President and Vice President were evacuated.

Investigation Continues

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated it remains unconfirmed whether Allen’s shot directly hit the Secret Service agent who sustained minor injuries due to a bulletproof vest. The Secret Service defended its security protocols, stating they were ‘rigorously tested’ and ‘critical in mitigating the threat.’

Allen’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 11th, a preliminary hearing where further details will be presented.
