OTTAWA – Marilyn Gladue has left the Liberal Party to sit as an independent MP, prompting questions about the direction of the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to CBC News’ chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton. The move marks the fourth MP to cross the floor from their respective parties recently.
Barton reported that Gladue’s political positions differ significantly from the Liberal Party’s current stance. She opposed the legalization of cannabis, voted against ending conversion therapy, and publicly supported the trucker convoy protesting vaccine mandates. Gladue also recently suggested by-elections should be automatic for MPs who change parties.
“She doesn’t really line up with the list of floor crossers who have come before her,” Barton stated, adding that Gladue may be further to the right than both the Prime Minister and some Conservative caucus members. The defection raises questions about the breadth of the Liberal “tent” and the comfort level within the Conservative caucus.
US-Iran Ceasefire & Claims of Victory
The broadcast also covered the recently agreed-upon ceasefire between the United States and Iran after nearly 40 days of conflict. Both sides are claiming victory, with U.S. President Donald Trump stating the U.S. “completely won,” and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council claiming an “undeniable historical and crushing defeat” for the U.S.
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed that Iran “begged” for the ceasefire and that Operation Epic Fury was a “historic and overwhelming victory.” He stated that 90% of Iran’s navy had been destroyed and its missile defense industrial base “shattered.” However, Iran continues to claim control over the Strait of Hormuz, a point of contention with the U.S.
Negotiations are expected to continue for two weeks, with key issues including Iran’s enriched uranium and the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has claimed Iran will surrender its enriched uranium, but Iran has not confirmed this. The Iranian regime has stated it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz but may demand tolls.
Artemis II Mission & AI-Generated Misinformation
CBC News also reported on the Artemis II mission, highlighting the successful ship-to-ship communication between the spacecraft and the International Space Station. However, the broadcast addressed the spread of AI-generated fake images and videos online purporting to show the mission.
NASA has confirmed the authenticity of images and videos posted on its official channels, including footage of the astronauts waving at a stationary camera. Analysts demonstrated how the fake videos were created using AI and identified discrepancies in the images, such as distorted hands and missing limbs. NASA directs the public to images.nasa.gov for verified content.
