Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing an uphill battle as she approaches the June 2 primary election. Critics are questioning her record, and challenger Spencer Pratt is gaining significant traction with voters.
Mayor Bass Defends Her Record
The mayor’s campaign is working to defend her performance amidst accusations of mishandling crises and a perceived disconnect with the electorate. During a recent interview with former MSNBC anchor Katie Phang, Bass dismissed Pratt as inexperienced and exploitative.
Bass stated, “I feel like he’s exploiting the grief of people in the Palisades, and I think that’s reprehensible. I am so well served and I served at the state and federal level. I have the relationships. I know how our government works.”
Pratt Challenges Bass’s Leadership
Spencer Pratt, whose home was destroyed in the 2025 Palisades fire, responded to Bass’s comments on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. He accused the mayor of negligence and alleged cover-ups related to the fire.
Pratt asserted, “Yeah, I’m not sure if Karen Bass forgot that she let my house burn down and my parents’ house burn down, and I had actual neighbors burn alive across the street from my childhood home.”
Fundraising and Endorsements
Pratt’s campaign has demonstrated strong fundraising capabilities, raising nearly $540,000 in the first filing period, slightly surpassing Bass’s $495,000. However, Bass maintains a substantial cash reserve with nearly $2.3 million on hand.
Bass has secured endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, and Adam Schiff. Harris highlighted a two-year decline in homelessness and reduced crime rates as evidence of Bass’s success, though these claims have been disputed by critics.
A Battle Between Establishment and Grassroots
The race has become a clear contrast between Bass’s established political network and Pratt’s grassroots appeal. Pratt’s message of accountability resonates with voters frustrated by the mayor’s handling of disasters like the Palisades fire.
As the primary nears, the election is shaping up to be a contest between the status quo represented by Bass and a challenger demanding change and accountability.
