Labour's disappointing performance in recent local elections has intensified pressure on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, with senior MPs openly discussing his future amid growing discontent within the party.
Leadership Challenge Looms
MP Cat West has threatened to initiate a leadership contest by seeking nominations for a new party leader. If she secures support from at least 81 Labour MPs, a full-scale contest could be triggered, according to party rules.
Leadership Election Process
Under Labour's constitution, a challenger must garner nominations from 20% of the parliamentary party to force a leadership race. With 403 MPs currently in the Commons, this means 81 signatures are needed. Starmer, as the incumbent, would automatically proceed to a ballot without needing nominations.
The election process would involve all Labour members with at least six months' membership and trade union affiliates voting on a 'one person, one vote' system. If no candidate secures over 50% of first-preference votes in a multi-candidate contest, votes would be redistributed based on ranked preferences.
Potential Contenders and Party Divisions
Doubt is growing that West can rally enough support to challenge Starmer’s leadership, although some believe she may be acting as a proxy for Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who could potentially benefit from an early contest when compared to Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is not currently in the Commons.
Cabinet Unrest and Potential Resignations
Even without a formal leadership challenge, Sir Keir faces additional risks from potential mass resignations within his Cabinet or a broader parliamentary revolt. Such turmoil could force him to stand down by making his position untenable, much like the events that led to Boris Johnson’s ousting in 2022 after a wave of ministerial resignations.
Starmer's Response
Starmer is set to deliver a crucial speech outlining his strategy to revitalize Labour’s prospects. However, the rising discontent indicates deep-rooted party divisions, and while a full-fledged leadership battle is still unlikely, the pressure on Starmer continues to mount.
