Zack Polanski's Political Evolution
Zack Polanski, the current leader of the Green Party, has experienced a significant and controversial political shift. Once a proud Zionist and Liberal Democrat candidate, he now heads a party increasingly associated with anti-Israel sentiment and, alarmingly, anti-Semitic rhetoric.
Early Political Career and Zionist Stance
In April 2016, while campaigning as a Liberal Democrat candidate, Polanski firmly asserted his Jewish identity and enthusiastic Zionism during a hustings in north London. He positioned a vote for his party as support for liberalism, Israel, and Judaism. Polanski, formerly known as David Paulden, had legally changed his name to reclaim his family’s Jewish surname.
From Life Coach to Political Aspirant
Prior to entering politics, Polanski worked as a life coach, actor, and hypnotherapist. He sought a position on the London Assembly, representing a notable career change. He was considered part of the Liberal Democrats’ ‘soft-Right’ wing and was praised for his energy and efficiency, even being recognized as a ‘star of 2015’ by Lib Dem Voice magazine.
Defection to the Green Party and Rise to Leadership
After failing to win a seat on the London Assembly and being passed over for a parliamentary seat in Richmond Park, Polanski expressed his disappointment. He subsequently defected to the Green Party, quickly ascending to deputy leader in 2022 and leader in 2024. This marked a dramatic change in his political alignment and his views on Israel and Judaism.
A Shift in Stance on Israel and Rising Concerns
The once-vocal supporter of Israel adopted a vehemently anti-Israel position. Under Polanski’s leadership, the Green Party has become increasingly linked to anti-Semitic rhetoric and actions. Many view this transformation as a politically motivated U-turn.
Controversial Candidates and Allegations of Anti-Semitism
The extent of this shift is evident in the Green Party’s candidates for upcoming local elections. Saiqa Ali and Sabine Mairey were arrested for allegedly inciting racial hatred through social media posts – Ali shared an image of a Hamas fighter, and Mairey posted a picture seemingly justifying an attack on a synagogue.
Further Examples of Offensive Remarks
Another candidate, Mark Bittlestone, has shared material questioning the veracity of the October 7th atrocities and making deeply offensive remarks about Israel. Polanski initially denied plans to campaign with Ali and Mairey, despite reports to the contrary, and the party initially failed to remove them as candidates.
A Troubling Trend
This situation highlights a disturbing trend within the Green Party under Polanski’s leadership, transforming it from a platform for environmentalism into one associated with hard-Left ideologies and anti-Semitic views, attracting individuals previously linked to or expelled from the Labour Party.
