A Daily Mail investigation has revealed that several Green Party candidates, including a primary school governor and a retired university professor, are facing accusations of anti-Semitism due to their controversial social media posts.

Educators Entering Politics

A growing number of educators are transitioning from the classroom to the political arena. Some Green Party candidates, who have spent their careers shaping young minds, are now seeking public office, raising concerns about their influence and the values they promote.

Among those running in the upcoming local elections are a primary school governor, a secondary school teacher, and a retired university professor. Their controversial social media posts have sparked outrage, with accusations that they have spread harmful conspiracy theories and justified acts of violence against Jewish communities.

Party Under Scrutiny

The Green Party’s selection of these candidates has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders and advocacy groups. Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative MP, recently warned of an ‘epidemic’ of anti-Semitic attacks following a knife rampage in Golders Green, London.

Lord Polak, a former leader of Conservative Friends of Israel, questioned whether the Green Party had conducted proper due diligence on its candidates. He suggested that their endorsement of individuals with such views reflects poorly on the party’s values.

Controversial Candidate: Ifhat Shaheen

Social Media Posts Under Fire

One of the most contentious figures is Ifhat Shaheen, a Green Party candidate in Stoke Newington, north London. Shaheen, who describes herself as a ‘parent advocate’ and board member at her local Sure Start center, has pledged to prioritize ‘kindness and compassion’ in her political work.

However, on October 7, 2023, the day Hamas launched its attacks on Israel, Shaheen defended the killings, rapes, and kidnappings as a form of Palestinian ‘self-defense.’ She also shared posts describing the atrocities as a ‘fightback’ against ‘Zionist oppression,’ using an applause emoji.

In the months that followed, she promoted conspiracy theories suggesting that Israeli forces were responsible for some of the deaths, despite evidence to the contrary. She has also denied claims of sexual violence during the Hamas attacks, contradicting United Nations findings.

Support for Controversial Organizations

Shaheen’s social media activity also reveals her support for organizations like Cage, a group criticized for its ties to extremist figures. In 2015, Cage described Jihadi John as a ‘beautiful young man.’ Despite this, Shaheen has repeatedly praised Cage and encouraged donations.

Her response to recent anti-Semitic incidents, including an arson attack on Jewish ambulances in Golders Green, has further fueled concerns. She initially blamed the media and politicians for inciting violence instead of condemning the attack.

Broader Concerns and Upcoming Elections

The controversy highlights broader concerns about the rise of anti-Semitism in political discourse. With polls predicting significant gains for the Greens in the upcoming elections, the controversy has intensified.

Many are questioning whether the party is prioritizing political expediency over moral responsibility. The outcome of these elections could have far-reaching implications for the Green Party’s reputation and the safety of Jewish communities across the UK.
