HALIFAX – CBC News reported on several developing stories Thursday, including the impact of the Middle East conflict on Canadian food prices, a significant political shift in Nova Scotia, and upcoming space travel provisions.
Rising Food Costs in Nova Scotia
Food prices in Nova Scotia are increasing due to fuel surcharges imposed by shippers and suppliers as a result of the conflict in the Middle East, according to a CBC News broadcast. Arthur Zaid, a representative of Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank, stated that the organization is being forced to pass these increased costs onto consumers. The price of diesel has jumped 40 percent since the conflict began, impacting the transportation of goods, particularly fresh produce, meat, and dairy.
Shoppers in rural and remote communities are expected to feel the impact most acutely. Experts suggest that purchasing local, seasonal produce as the Canadian growing season begins may help mitigate rising grocery costs. Lydia O'Regan, a Nova Scotia resident, has already reduced her mileage and stopped delivering diapers to families in need due to rising fuel costs.
Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank is also experiencing increased costs related to fuel prices, affecting both grocery purchases and deliveries. The organization is prioritizing deliveries to clients with medical needs and requesting those able to pick up food to do so.
Nova Scotia MP Joins Liberal Party
Marilyn Gladue, a long-time Conservative MP representing a riding in southwestern Ontario, has crossed the floor to join the Liberal party. The move has sparked both outrage and optimism among constituents, with some expressing feelings of betrayal. Gladue won her last election with over 40,000 votes.
According to Gladue, her decision was motivated by the Prime Minister’s plans to build more homes, diversify trade, and reduce crime. Neighbouring Tory MPs could not be reached for comment.
Kimberly Brissett, chief of the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, noted that the Liberal Party generally provides more support to First Nations communities, and that Gladue has been supportive of urgent issues facing her constituents.
Artemis II Mission Menu
NASA has released the menu for the Artemis II mission’s 10-day trip to the moon. The menu includes vegetable quiche, barbecue beef brisket, and granola with blueberries. Notably, the crew will have nearly 60 tortillas, chosen for their versatility and ability to contain crumbs in the spacecraft.
