Stadacona Park, a popular recreational area for families in Victoria, has partially reopened following a devastating arson attack that severely damaged its main play structure. While the community was deeply saddened by the destruction of the park – completed just two-and-a-half years ago at a cost of $750,000 – officials have confirmed that some areas are now safe for public use.
Partial Reopening & Available Amenities
Visitors to Stadacona Park will find that the swings, including the accessible swing designed for inclusive play, are still operational. The in-ground trampoline and one of the spring-loaded toys also survived the fire and are available for children to enjoy.
The Arson Incident
The fire broke out recently, prompting a rapid response from local emergency services. Captain Atkinson of the fire department stated that crews arrived within minutes of receiving the 911 call. The fire was intense, fueled by the playground’s plastic and rubber components, creating thick, toxic smoke and high temperatures.
Fire Department Response
The playground’s central tower was completely engulfed in flames before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. The fire left a significant impact on the neighborhood, which had come to appreciate the modern facility.
Police Investigation & Arrest
The Victoria Police Department has arrested an individual in connection with the arson. Authorities are working with the BC Prosecution Service to formalize charges against the suspect, who has been released under certain conditions. The investigation is ongoing, and police are limiting details to protect its integrity.
Future Plans & Reconstruction
The City of Victoria is committed to restoring the playground. Municipal staff are working with playground suppliers to develop a replacement plan and timeline. Updates on the project will be shared with the public as they become available, recognizing the park’s importance to local families.
