Franklin County Judge Kim Brown sentenced Derek Miller, 44, to 28 to 33.5 years for involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery, both with firearm specifications. Brian Richardson, 61, was sentenced to 10 to 13 years for involuntary manslaughter, including a three-year firearm specification, and two unrelated drug charges.
The incident began when Columbus Police responded to a shooting report on East 13th Avenue. Officers found Miller with gunshot wounds and Jerry Harper nearby, who later succumbed to his injuries. Investigations revealed Miller and Richardson lured Harper to an apartment for a drug deal with the intent to rob him. Harper resisted, leading to a fatal exchange of gunfire.
