Suffolk County police are employing a unique strategy to combat drunk driving: showcasing a seized Corvette Stingray as a visible warning to potential offenders.
Corvette Seized from Repeat Offender
A 2020 Corvette Stingray, valued between $60,000 and $90,000, was confiscated in 2022 from a driver with prior DWI convictions under existing county legislation. Instead of being auctioned, the vehicle has been repurposed as a mobile public service announcement.
A Mobile Public Safety Message
The Corvette has been modified with police markings and prominently displays the message “DWI seizure.” This initiative is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to reduce driving while intoxicated, which have already shown positive results in lowering fatal accidents over the past three years.
Impactful Deterrent
Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina emphasized the significance of the vehicle seizure and its potential to save lives. He stated that the individual who lost the Corvette will likely remember the consequences for a lifetime, and the intervention may have prevented a tragedy.
The Corvette, equipped with a sunroof, V8 engine, and low mileage, received a distinctive paint job and was fitted with police sirens and flashing lights. It will be displayed at public events and parades, serving as a constant reminder of the penalties for drunk driving.
Long-Term Investment in Safety
Commissioner Catalina believes the Corvette’s deterrent effect is more valuable than any revenue from an auction. He stated that preventing even one fatality is worth more than any financial gain.
In 2023, the department intensified its efforts to remove impaired drivers from the roads, resulting in a decrease in traffic fatalities. DWI arrests are now a key performance indicator for officers seeking advancement, promoting proactive enforcement.
A Symbol of Commitment
The Corvette Stingray represents the Suffolk County Police Department’s dedication to protecting citizens from the dangers of drunk driving. The department hopes this visible reminder will encourage responsible behavior and save lives.
