The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has scheduled several major road closures across Western Washington for the weekend of October 2. These maintenance projects will impact critical arteries including SR 520, I-5, and SR 99, promising substantial delays for regional commuters and sports fans.
The SR 520 reconfiguration ahead of 2027
Eastbound SR 520 will face a significant closure between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, lasting until 5 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. WSDOT reported that crews will be removing sections of the old eastbound off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard and removing the old barrier on the existing SR 520 mainline.
This intensive work is part of a long-term infrastructure strategy to prpare the highway for a major traffic shift in both directions scheduled for 2027. While the section between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard will be inaccessible ,eastbound SR 520 will remain open across Lake Washington, and drivers will still be able to utilize the Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to enter the highway.
Aurora Bridge inspections and the Sunday Seahawks game
Routine bridge inspections on the Aurora Bridge are set to cause morning delays on both Saturday and Sunday. According to the WSDOT report, two right lanes of southbound SR 99 across the bridge will close from 5:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, while the northbound lanes will face similar closures on Sunday morning, Oct. 4.
These closures coincide with a high-traffic weekend, as travelers prepare for Sunday's Seahawks game in Seattle. The congestion is expected to be compounded by overnight maintenance in Seattle's downtown tunnel, where both directions of SR 99 will close from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday for fire systems testing, road sweeping, and drain cleaning.
I-405 southbound delays near Southcenter and SEA Airport
Travelers heading toward SEA Airport or the Southcenter area should prepare for major disruptions on I-405. The report notes that up to two southbound I-405 lanes in Tukwila will close from 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, until 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, along with the closure of the southbound HOV off-ramp to northbound I-405 .
In Kirkland, additional delays are expected due to paving work on Northeast 85th Street. This project requires the closure of on- and off-ramps connecting the street to both directions of I-405, with closures occurring in two shifts: late Thursday night through early Friday morning, and again from Friday night through Monday morning.
What the Revive I-5 project leaves unanswered for commuters
The onngoing "Revive I-5" project continues to impact travel, with two right lanes remaining closed on northbound I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge. While WSDOT has warned that these closures will create a ripple effect of heavy traffic on surrounding surface streets and I-405, the agency has not provided specific data on the projected increase in travel times for those commuting through the corridor .
Furthermore, while the report highlights upcoming expansion joint replacements on westbound SR 16 at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, it remains unclear how these repairs will interact with the Mt. baker Highway (SR 542) closures scheduled for late September and early October. Commuters are left to navigate these overlapping maintenance windows without a clear picture of the total regional slowdown.
Bellevue's new speed camera enforcement and SR 16 repairs
Drivers in Bellevue should also prepare for increased enforcement as the grace period for four new speed safety cameras has officially ended. this means motorists can now be ticketed for infractions within these newly monitored zones.
In addition to the new enforcement, regional travel remains complicated by the SR 16 westbound expansion work and the scheduled winter preparation closures on Mt. Baker Highway. These various projects, ranging from safety technology to structural repairs, represent a heavy maintenance load for the Western Washington transport network this month.
