Search Continues for Kadin Savikataaq in Nunavut
Disappearance and Initial Investigation
The community of Arviat, Nunavut, remains deeply affected by the disappearance of Kadin Savikataaq, a 20-year-old woman who went missing on August 20, 2024. Despite an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), her family believes foul play was involved and continues to search for her.
Family's Doubts and Persistent Search
The RCMP concluded that Kadin likely drowned in Hudson Bay after a single-vehicle collision. However, Kadin’s family firmly rejects this explanation. Her mother, Siuqpaat Copland, stated, “She didn’t come home because something was done to her,” expressing the family’s unwavering conviction that her daughter’s disappearance was not accidental.
Circumstances Surrounding the Vanishing
The circumstances surrounding Kadin’s disappearance are unclear, with no witnesses coming forward. Kadin was last seen driving her mother’s white truck on the night of August 19, 2024. She sent a text message stating she was still driving, but communication ceased shortly after. Her last message to her mother was, “Mom, I’m not sleeping at home.”
Details of the Night and Vehicle Discovery
A friend reported that Kadin had contacted him asking for a ride home after consuming alcohol, and that he overheard other men with her. The truck was later discovered submerged in Hudson Bay at a location known as The Point. The area is characterized by bogs and marshlands, with no trees, and is only accessible during low tide.
Challenges in the Search
Search efforts were immediately complicated by the rising tide. The truck was found on its side after the tide receded, but Kadin was not located. A photograph of the submerged vehicle was shared on Facebook, prompting Kadin’s adoptive father, Joe Savikataaq Jr., to investigate.
Community Impact and Family Connections
Despite numerous searches, Kadin remains missing. Copland attempted to speak with one of the men who was reportedly with Kadin, but he provided no useful information. The case is particularly sensitive as Joe Savikataaq Jr. is the mayor of Arviat, and his father, Joe Savikataaq Sr., was the premier of Nunavut at the time of the incident.
Kadin's Life and Aspirations
Kadin Savikataaq was described as an outgoing and determined young woman with a passion for aviation and hockey. She had already earned her private pilot’s license and was working towards her commercial license. She maintained close relationships with both her birth parents, Siuqpaat and Dudley Copland, and her adoptive parents, Joe Savikataaq Jr. and Lillian Savikataaq.
The family remains resolute in their search for Kadin’s remains, hoping to bring closure to the community and find justice for their daughter.
