A respected Ontario Provincial Police officer, Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 401 in Cobourg on Monday, April 27, 2026.
Tragic Loss for OPP
Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique announced the death, stating, “Hearts are broken.” Officers responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on Highway 401 in Cobourg earlier in the day.
Officer's Service and Contributions
Sergeant Malcolm had been with the OPP since 2020 and was a valued member of the police service’s Golden Helmets motorcycle team. The Golden Helmets are known for their skilled performances at events across Ontario, including fairs, festivals, and parades.
Commissioner Carrique highlighted Malcolm’s lifelong dedication to law enforcement, sharing, “His career goal was to become a police officer. I will be forever grateful to him for his service.”
Community Mourns
The Ontario Provincial Police Association, led by President David Sabatini, released a statement acknowledging the dangers faced by police officers every day. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed his condolences on social media, extending his thoughts to Malcolm’s family and friends.
Investigation Underway
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this early stage, there is no indication that another vehicle was involved. Highway 401 remains closed in both directions between Cobourg and Port Hope as the investigation continues.
The OPP is asking anyone with information, including witnesses or video footage, to come forward.
