A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at Elko Regional Airport in Nevada earlier this month when Giovanni Perez, 37, fatally shot his 11-year-old son, Callan, before taking his own life.

Stranded at the Airport

The father and son were stranded in Elko after their rental car broke down near Winnemucca and were awaiting a replacement vehicle. Authorities report that they entered an airport restroom together on two occasions, and it was during the second visit that Perez committed the horrific act.

Tragic Outcome and Initial Response

Callan was rushed to North Eastern Nevada Regional Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The devastating event occurred on April 13th, prompting a response from the Elko Police Department and a subsequent search by a bomb squad, which fortunately yielded no explosives in the family’s vehicle.

A Father's Recognition

The tragedy is particularly poignant given Callan’s recent recognition in a ‘father of the year’ essay contest organized by the Merced County Office of Education in California. Last June, Callan wrote a heartfelt essay detailing what his father meant to him and the positive impact he had on his life, earning him third place.

Essay Contest Details

The essay contest aimed to celebrate the bonds between parents and children and acknowledge the influence parents have on their children’s development.

Community Support

Now, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Callan’s funeral and provide assistance to his grieving family. The fundraiser describes Callan as an exceptionally bright, funny, and kind child, whose life was tragically cut short.

Fundraising Efforts

As of Wednesday morning, the campaign had raised approximately $12,000 towards a $13,000 goal. Friends and family are sharing memories of Callan, including plans to plant a Redwood tree in his honor at his school and naming a classroom guinea pig after him.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind this senseless act. Elko police have revealed that Perez was involved in a custody dispute with Callan’s maternal grandparents and was reportedly attempting to prevent Callan from having contact with them and other family members.

Potential Contributing Factors

Perez had also claimed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder related to his military service, a claim that authorities are currently investigating. The father and son had ‘ties’ to Merced, California, and a missing person’s report had been filed concerning them in Clovis, California, last December, though they were later located in Ogden, Utah.

They were traveling to the Reno area at the time of the incident, but the purpose of their trip remains unknown. Police acknowledge that they may never fully understand the reasons behind this horrific event, leaving a community and a family shattered by unimaginable loss.
