Morrisons Manager Dismissed After Confronting Shoplifter

Sean Egan, a 46-year-old Morrisons manager, was terminated from his position after attempting to stop a violent shoplifter at the Aldridge branch near Walsall. Egan had dedicated 29 years of service to the company before the incident last December.

Incident and Dismissal

The incident involved Daniel Kendall, a serial shoplifter with over 100 prior offenses and a known history of targeting the store. Despite being spat at during the confrontation, Egan attempted to detain Kendall, leading to his dismissal by Morrisons management. The company cited a violation of their ‘deter-and-not-detain’ policy as the reason for his termination.

Financial Hardship for Long-Serving Employee

Egan, who began working at Morrisons at the age of 17, stated that his family is now facing financial difficulties. His last paycheck was received in January, and he described the loss of his job as a significant blow to his identity and purpose.

Community Rallies in Support

Local shoppers have hailed Egan as a hero, and a large protest was held outside the Aldridge store on Saturday. Protesters carried signs with slogans like ‘Justice for Sean Egan’ and ‘Morrisons, Do the Right Thing,’ and vowed to boycott the supermarket until Egan is reinstated.

Egan Expresses Gratitude

Egan expressed his gratitude for the “incredible” outpouring of support, noting that even strangers attended the protest to stand with him. He recounted receiving handwritten letters, banners, and even sunscreen from supporters.

Shoplifter Sentenced and Egan's Criticism

Daniel Kendall was sentenced to 46 weeks in prison for multiple offenses, including the theft that led to Egan’s dismissal. Kendall had previously admitted to stealing to fund a £50-per-day heroin habit. Egan criticized Morrisons for what he felt was a disregard for his 29 years of loyalty, stating the company “threw him under the bus.”

Broader Debate on Employee Rights

The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the responsibilities of retail employees when confronting shoplifters and the level of support they receive from their employers. Egan’s story highlights the challenges faced by retail workers and the need for adequate protection and backing from management.
