Body of Maine Lobsterman Recovered
The body of Thomas West, 63, of Steuben, Maine, was recovered from Dyer Bay following an overnight search. His lobster boat was discovered operating unattended, prompting the search operation.
Initial Search and Discovery
The search began late on April 21st after local fishermen reported West’s 35-foot lobster boat, Aces and Eights, was found running without anyone on board. The vessel was located near the wharf at the end of Merritt Road in Dyer Bay.
Challenging Conditions
Initial search efforts were hampered by low visibility. This led to a temporary suspension of the operation around 2:30 a.m. on April 22nd, with plans to resume with improved conditions.
Tragic Outcome
Tragically, the search was superseded when West’s body was located by family members at approximately 6 a.m. on April 22nd in Dyer Bay, near where the boat was initially found.
Investigation Underway
The family contacted authorities, and West’s body was transferred to a relative’s fishing vessel. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Maine.
Vessel Examination
A thorough examination will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. The recovery of Aces and Eights will also be part of the investigation to assess potential equipment malfunctions.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources and Marine Patrol have expressed condolences to the West family. Thomas West was a well-known and respected member of the Steuben fishing community, and his loss is deeply felt.
