Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents opened fire on an alleged 18th Street gang member near Interstate 5 in Patterson, California, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred during an attempt to arrest Carlos Ivan Mendoza, who is wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder.

According to ICE Director Todd Lyons, the operation was specifically targeted at locating and apprehending Mendoza. Dashcam footage shows the events unfolding as agents attempted to take Mendoza into custody in Stanislaus County.
Vehicle Chase and Escalation
The situation escalated when Mendoza reversed his vehicle, striking a federal vehicle. He then accelerated forward and began a partial U-turn. Agents responded by aiming their weapons at the vehicle as it crossed a median divider.
Use of Force
Lyons stated that Mendoza “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over.” In response, ICE agents fired “defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public.”
Aftermath and Investigation
Mendoza was transported to a hospital for treatment, and his condition remains unknown. The number of shots fired and officers involved is currently undisclosed, pending the ongoing investigation.
Traffic Disruptions and Scene Investigation
Authorities closed on- and off-ramps at Interstate 5 and Sperry Avenue, causing significant traffic disruptions. The scene included a heavily damaged black vehicle with multiple bullet holes, cordoned off with crime scene tape.
FBI Involvement
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation, in collaboration with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. A joint news conference was held, but officials declined to release further details to avoid compromising the investigation.
