The City of Gulf Shores is embarking on a community-driven project to redesign the playground at Johnnie Sims Park. Dubbed 'Reimagine Kids Park,' the initiative will prioritize community input to create a modern and safe play area for children.

A Beloved Playground Reimagined

The existing wooden playground, originally built in 1996 through a collaboration with Leathers & Associates and significant community involvement, has served generations of Gulf Shores families. Despite consistent maintenance and repairs, the structure has reached the end of its lifespan.

Honoring the Past, Building for the Future

The City recognizes the emotional connection residents have to the original playground’s design. The redesign will honor the park’s history while creating a contemporary, safe, and imaginative space for today’s children. This project is seen as a testament to the community’s values and commitment to future generations.

Community Engagement: 'Come Play With Us!'

Leathers & Associates, the original designers, will lead the design process, working closely with the community. A key component of this process is the “Come Play with Us!” event, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Johnnie Sims Park.

Event Details and Online Participation

The event will feature a drawing station for children to share their “dream park” visions and a survey for adults to provide input on desired features. Attendees can also enjoy music, face painting, games, snow cones, and cotton candy. For those unable to attend in person, an online town hall platform will be available for surveys, design previews, and feedback.

City Leaders Emphasize Community Role

Grant Brown, Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, emphasized the project’s community focus: “This is truly a community-driven project. We are aiming to create a park that resonates with the creativity and unique needs of our families.” He highlighted the event as a crucial platform for gathering ideas and shaping a cherished space for years to come.

The City is dedicated to transparency and inclusivity, ensuring all voices are heard throughout the playground’s transformation. The goal is to build a space designed by and for the community, fostering joy and recreation for generations.
