Governor General Returns to Tumbler Ridge to Support Community Healing

Governor General Mary Simon will return to Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, from April 27th to 29th, 2026, to demonstrate continued support for the community as it heals from the mass shooting that occurred in February.

Continued Commitment to Community Well-being

This return visit signifies a sustained commitment to stand with the residents of Tumbler Ridge, extending beyond the initial crisis response and focusing on long-term well-being. The Governor General’s office highlighted mental health as a core component of her mandate.

Engaging with Local Leadership and First Responders

Governor General Simon’s schedule includes meetings with local leadership, including Mayor Darryl Krakowka, town councillors, and municipal staff, to discuss community needs and recovery efforts. She will also express gratitude to the firefighters, paramedics, and RCMP members from Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd for their service during and after the incident.

Supporting Students and Educators

A visit to the temporary Tumbler Ridge Secondary School site is planned. During this visit, Governor General Simon will engage with students, teachers, support staff, clinicians, and safe school liaisons, offering support and listening to their experiences.

Focus on Reconciliation and Resilience

Governor General Simon will attend an English First Peoples class to discuss reconciliation and resilience with students. This demonstrates a commitment to addressing societal issues contributing to trauma and fostering healing.

The afternoon will be dedicated to expressing gratitude to community health-care professionals for their unwavering dedication to the people of Tumbler Ridge.

Background on the Tragedy

The visit comes amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding the response to Jesse Van Rootselaar, the shooter, and concerns about alerting authorities to his online activity. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including the shooter, discovered at the high school and a connected residence.
