The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office recovered an explosive device from the Capitol State Forest on Wednesday afternoon.
Device Discovery and Response
The device was located near the 8800 block of Waddell Creek Road, prompting road closures and evacuations around 4:45 p.m. Law enforcement responded to reports of a potential explosive device in the area.
For approximately four hours, personnel assessed and neutralized the threat. By late evening, the WSP confirmed the item was an explosive device and had been successfully removed.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not disclosed the type of explosive or the motive behind its placement. A formal press release with additional details is expected soon.
Road Closures and Evacuations
Waddell Creek Road was closed during the operation, and nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution. The road has since reopened, and residents have been allowed to return home.
