An 18-year-old former Atlanta Braves minor league player has been arrested following a fatal hit-and-run collision on Interstate 75 in Manatee County, Florida. The crash tragically claimed the life of 34-year-old Stavan Albert Facey, a semi-truck driver.

Fatal Crash on I-75

The incident began when a dark-colored 2022 Ford Mustang, allegedly driven by Jonathan Matos Morales, was reportedly driving erratically in the morning traffic. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Mustang changed lanes, striking a Chevy Trailblazer driven by a 63-year-old man.

Chain Reaction and Fatality

The impact of the collision forced the Trailblazer into the path of a semi-tractor-trailer operated by Facey. Despite attempts to avoid a collision, the semi-truck overturned across the southbound lanes of I-75. Sadly, Facey, a father of four, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Trailblazer sustained only minor injuries.

Suspect Flees, Braves Cooperate

Witnesses and law enforcement reported that Matos Morales briefly stopped his vehicle before fleeing the scene, continuing south on I-75. The investigation eventually led troopers to the Atlanta Braves organization, who discovered the damaged Mustang on their private property and immediately contacted authorities.

Arrest and Charges

Matos Morales, formerly part of the Braves’ minor league system, was taken into custody and booked into the Manatee County Jail. He is facing felony charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality. The Atlanta Braves released a statement confirming their cooperation with law enforcement and expressing condolences to Facey’s family.

Preventable Tragedy

Trooper Ken Watson of the Florida Highway Patrol emphasized the preventable nature of the tragedy. He stated that the Mustang driver’s reckless lane-weaving created an unavoidable situation for the semi-truck, which lacks the maneuverability of passenger vehicles. Authorities are urging motorists to practice defensive driving and remain at the scene of any accident.
