Edward Waters University (EWU) has implemented a new policy prohibiting unsanctioned alumni gatherings on campus following a series of violent incidents during Alumni Weekend in early April.
Policy Change Driven by Safety Concerns
The decision comes amid concerns over student safety, the presence of weapons, and alcohol violations. EWU emphasizes that all large-scale events must now be formally approved and adhere to strict safety protocols.
Details of the New Policy
In a letter to the campus community, the administration stated, “When that safety is compromised by anyone under any circumstances, the University will act decisively.” The longstanding tradition of informal spring alumni gatherings will now require formal approval and adherence to university safety protocols.
Any large-scale events on campus must be officially sanctioned, with organizers required to submit formal requests and comply with space rental, staffing, and security requirements. The university acknowledged the decision was not made lightly, but stressed the incidents highlighted serious safety concerns.
Continued Alumni Engagement
EWU reiterated its commitment to alumni engagement through officially sanctioned events like Homecoming, which already have enhanced security and structured programming. The university clarified that while alumni are valued, large-scale engagement must occur within a safe framework.
The letter concluded with a call for shared responsibility, reminding the community that Edward Waters University belongs to everyone, and conduct and respect for the campus are essential. Additional guidance on submitting future campus space and event requests is expected soon.
