Drivers in Croydon, southeast London, have achieved a significant victory as the local council has reduced the size of a contentious yellow box junction. The change comes after the junction generated nearly £2 million in fines since its installation in 2017.
Controversial Junction Design
The yellow box junction, located on Addiscombe Road, had been a source of frustration for motorists. Drivers argued that its excessive size led to unfair penalty charge notices (PCNs).
Campaign for Change
Campaigners, including Sam Wright, known as the “Yellow Box Guru,” criticized the junction, claiming it was disproportionately large and designed to maximize revenue. Mr. Wright’s investigation revealed the junction had generated 26,244 fines, totaling approximately £1.9 million for the council.
Tribunal Ruling
The efforts of Mr. Wright culminated in a tribunal case earlier this year. A parking adjudicator ruled that the yellow box was fundamentally flawed and disproportionately large. The adjudicator quashed the fine of the motorist who appealed and ordered the council to cancel all outstanding fines related to the junction.
Council Response and Changes
Following the tribunal’s decision, Croydon Council conducted a review and reduced the size of the yellow box. Part of the junction was replaced with ‘Keep Clear’ road markings. A spokesperson for Croydon Council confirmed the changes were made in response to community feedback and to ensure efficient traffic flow.
Positive Reaction
Mr. Wright praised the council’s decision, stating it would save drivers from unfair fines. He also urged other London councils to review their yellow box junctions for similar flaws. The council emphasized its commitment to balancing safety and resident concerns while managing its highways.
