A legal challenge against CPS Energy has gained momentum with the addition of attorney Michael Lyons, representing plaintiffs Mayte Reeves and Jose Ochoa. The pair are suing the utility company following a gas explosion at their home.
Gas Explosion Lawsuit Heats Up
Reeves and Ochoa have retained Michael Lyons, an attorney with a successful history litigating against CPS Energy, including securing a significant verdict in a previous case. This development suggests a more assertive legal strategy as they pursue claims against the utility following a series of explosions in San Antonio.
Details of the Incident
The initial explosion occurred at the home of Tim and Kimberly Nowell, resulting in the hospitalization of the entire family. Just two hours later, Reeves and Ochoa’s home experienced a similar explosion, despite being told by CPS Energy it was safe to return. Sources indicate Reeves inadvertently triggered the explosion by activating her electric stove upon returning home.
Lyons’ Concerns and Expertise
Michael Lyons, specializing in gas explosion litigation, stated his commitment to a thorough investigation of the incidents. He emphasized the need to focus on the safety and integrity of San Antonio’s public gas system.
Lyons has previously suggested that the explosions may be linked to deteriorating underground pipes and undetected gas leaks. He also expressed concern over a reactive, rather than proactive, maintenance approach by gas companies, describing it as a ‘whack-a-mole’ strategy.
Other San Antonio Investigations
Beyond the CPS Energy lawsuit, San Antonio is addressing other concerning events. A mother has alleged that staff at Kirby Middle School, within the Judson Independent School District, physically assaulted her sixth-grade son with special needs, reportedly placing him in a chokehold. This claim is currently under investigation.
Leadership Changes and Other Incidents
There has also been a leadership change within the Mayor’s office, with Gina Ortiz Jones’ chief of staff no longer in their position. Details surrounding this departure remain limited. Additionally, a Southwest Independent School District staff member has been placed on administrative leave following an incident involving a student.
State and Local Law Enforcement Actions
On a state level, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has reiterated his call to block the licensing of a specific camp. Separately, law enforcement successfully dismantled a gift card tampering ring, arresting three individuals and recovering over 11,500 compromised gift cards.
