A controversial businessman, Alexander Stratford, is facing significant backlash from residents in Hertfordshire over his proposal to move a historic bridleway near his £2.8 million estate.
Ancient Path at the Center of Dispute
Alexander Stratford, 35, made his fortune as the founder of Lizard Labs, a company known for producing novel LSD derivatives. He has submitted plans to relocate a 1,000-year-old drover’s route, citing concerns about the safety of farm machinery and his personal privacy.
Locals Condemn the Proposal
Villagers argue that Stratford’s plan would destroy a cherished “green tunnel” – a picturesque route formed by trees and beloved by walkers and horse riders. They also believe the proposal is an attempt to erase a significant piece of local history.
Accusations of Intimidation
Critics accuse Stratford of attempting to pressure villagers into accepting his changes. They point to the placement of a skip and unsightly junk near the path’s entrance as a deliberate effort to discourage use.
Community Voices Concerns
Wayne Morris, chairman of the parish council, expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s not just a simple case of moving the route a few feet. It’s been a drover’s route for over 1,000 years.” Villager Andrew Butler condemned Stratford’s actions as an attempt to “change history,” emphasizing widespread opposition within the village.
Attempts at Persuasion and Ongoing Consultation
Stratford held a meeting at the local pub, the Five Horseshoes, offering free drinks to attendees in an attempt to present his case. However, villagers remain unconvinced by his claims regarding safety and privacy.
They also criticize the proposed alternative route through a nearby field, citing its unsuitable surface for horses, which has already led to riders falling. Hertfordshire County Council has confirmed it is conducting a “pre-order consultation” on Stratford’s application, amidst rising tensions in the village.
This dispute adds to existing tensions, as the village is already divided by another bridleway disagreement involving a different property owner.
