Texas authorities are currently investigating complaints against Camp Mystic while simultaneously reviewing the camp’s license renewal. The investigations are being conducted by the Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
Investigations Focus on Child Care and Compliance
The investigations center on the care provided to children at Camp Mystic and the camp’s adherence to state regulations. DSHS is reviewing hundreds of complaints related to these concerns.
Tragic Flood and Loss of Life
On July 4th of the previous year, a devastating flood on the Guadalupe River resulted in the deaths of 27 girls, counselors, and the camp owner. This tragedy has fueled the ongoing scrutiny of the camp’s operations.
Legal Challenges and Calls for Closure
Camp Mystic faces multiple legal battles that could determine its future. The parents of Cile Steward, whose body remains unrecovered, have petitioned to keep the camp closed to preserve evidence for their lawsuit.
Lawsuit Alleges State Negligence
A federal lawsuit alleges the state failed to comply with the law by licensing Camp Mystic without ensuring a proper evacuation plan was in place. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has also urged the DSHS not to renew the camp’s license.
“With many questions remaining unanswered surrounding the deaths of 27 young girls, parents and Texans deserve to have all issues resolved prior to Camp Mystic and/or their operators being allowed to welcome children back into their care this summer,” stated Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick during a press conference.
Camp Operations and Cooperation
Camp Mystic is currently operating a newer section of its property, Camp Mystic Cypress Lake, which is located on higher ground and was unaffected by the flood. The camp has stated its cooperation with a joint committee of state legislators.
Mikal Watts, attorney for Camp Mystic and the Eastland family, expressed satisfaction with the involvement of the Texas Rangers, describing them as an “independent and honorable investigatory body.” He hopes for a comprehensive report covering all 119 deaths that occurred that day.
The Texas Tribune emphasizes its commitment to accurate and transparent reporting on these developments and relies on public support to continue its journalistic work.
