Boomer, the famous African lion, has died at the age of eighteen. The iconic animal passed away on April 8th at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in British Columbia following a battle with kidney failure.
A Life Marked by Adventure
Zoo officials confirmed that Boomer was humanely euthanized after his quality of life rapidly declined. He had been under veterinary care for kidney failure for the past year. Staff made the difficult decision to prevent further suffering despite their best efforts to provide comfort and care.
The 2008 Escape
Boomer first gained national attention in April 2008 when, as a seven-month-old cub, he escaped from a temporary housing situation in Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg, Quebec. This sparked a multi-day search operation involving police helicopters with heat-seeking cameras and lockdowns of local schools and daycares.
Authorities urged the public to exercise extreme caution, especially at night, as the search intensified. The escape highlighted the challenges of keeping wild animals in non-traditional environments.
Later Life and Legacy
Following his capture, Boomer was moved to the Granby Zoo near Montreal and later to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, where he lived for the rest of his life. The Kitigan Zibi Police Service recently honored Boomer on social media, sharing fond memories of his personality, including his fondness for steak gifted by a local leader.
Boomer’s story remains a unique chapter in Canadian wildlife history, beginning with a dramatic escape and ending with compassionate care in British Columbia.
