After a year-long closure due to contamination and invasive species concerns, Big Creek Lake reopened to the public on Thursday with the opening of the Melvin E. Pierce Memorial Park at Fox Landing.

Lake Closure and Reopening

The prolonged closure, initially implemented in February 2025, was a response to concerns about water quality and the presence of invasive species. The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) facilitated the reopening, which marks a significant moment for local anglers and recreational enthusiasts.

New Park Amenities

The Melvin E. Pierce Memorial Park serves as the access point to the lake, offering controlled access and a range of amenities. Visitors can enjoy boat and kayak rentals, as well as a new fishing pier.

Rental Costs

  • Kayaks: $10 for four hours
  • Motorized Jon Boats: $25 for four hours
  • Skorpion Crappie Boats: $50 for four hours
  • Community Response

Gregory Finley, a local fisherman, expressed his excitement, successfully catching a jack fish on his first cast after the long wait. He noted the diverse fish population, including bass, bream, stripers, and crappie.

The reopening provides convenient fishing access for nearby residents, eliminating the need to travel to locations like Dauphin Island. However, some concerns were raised regarding the affordability of rentals, particularly for those on fixed incomes.

    Importance of the Lake

Big Creek Lake is a vital resource, serving as the primary drinking water source for approximately 350,000 people across Mobile and Baldwin counties. The new facility is designed to minimize the risk of introducing or spreading invasive species.

    Park Hours and Information

The park is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. during spring and summer, and until 5 p.m. during fall and winter. More information about amenities and rental procedures is available at www.jbconversefishing.com.

The reopening represents a collaborative effort between MAWSS, local fishermen, and the community, demonstrating a commitment to responsible resource management.

    Other Local News

The reopening occurs alongside separate investigations into a tragic domestic dispute and a murder in Wilmer, as well as a threat allegation investigated by Mobile police. These events highlight the complex challenges facing the community.
