Jamie Varley, 37, and John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, are currently on trial accused of the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey, who was known as ‘Elijah’ by the couple.
Confession of 'Dark Thoughts'
Preston Crown Court has heard that Varley confessed to a former colleague about having ‘dark thoughts’ of drowning or suffocating the baby. He stated, however, that he would never act on these thoughts. This confession occurred after a visit with Preston, who had his arm in a cast, and Varley appeared ‘on edge’ when his partner arrived.
Details of the Confession
The colleague attempted to reassure Varley, suggesting such thoughts are common and do not necessarily indicate intent. Varley claimed to have also disclosed these struggles to his workplace welfare officer and social workers involved in the adoption process. The prosecution finds it suspicious that Varley confided in a colleague rather than his partner.
Disturbing Video Evidence
The court was shown a Snapchat video taken by Varley at 4:45 pm on the day of Preston’s death. The 45-second video shows the baby struggling to breathe.
Medical Analysis
A medical expert analyzing the footage noted signs of cyanosis – a bluish discoloration indicating respiratory failure – and labored breathing. During the recording, Varley did not attempt to help the child. Instead, he used his phone to calculate figures and discuss selling a kayak with McGowan-Fazakerley.
There was no communication between the couple regarding Preston’s condition. Blackpool Victoria Hospital was less than a mile from their home, and they were familiar with the facility.
Timeline of Events
Prior to the tragedy, Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley had arranged to view a house. McGowan-Fazakerley then went to work, leaving Preston in the care of Varley’s mother. A photograph taken at 2:25 pm shows Preston appearing healthy and happy with his grandmother.
Upon returning home with Preston, Varley recorded the distressing video that is now key evidence in the case. The prosecution argues that Varley’s actions, or lack thereof, demonstrate a callous disregard for Preston’s well-being and suggest intentional harm. The trial is ongoing.
