A long-serving Asda employee was dismissed after confronting shoplifters at a South Shields supermarket, sparking debate about retailer policies and the safety of retail staff.

Incident at South Shields Asda

Gavin Ramsay, 49, a porter with 25 years of loyal service to Asda, intervened when he witnessed a group of young people leaving the store with stolen bottles of alcohol. He instinctively attempted to retrieve a bottle from one of the youths, resulting in a physical altercation and the shoplifter falling to the floor.

Confrontation and Assault

Video footage shows Mr. Ramsay initially attempting to grab a bottle of Absolut Vodka from the youth’s trousers. After securing the bottle, he was confronted by two other individuals from the group, one of whom brandished another stolen bottle menacingly. The youths then followed Mr. Ramsay inside the store and physically assaulted him, pushing him onto a moving walkway.

Dismissal for Gross Misconduct

Despite successfully recovering the stolen item, Mr. Ramsay was subsequently sacked for gross misconduct, violating Asda’s policy against physically challenging shoplifters. This incident mirrors a similar case involving Sean Egan, a Morrisons manager who was also dismissed for confronting a shoplifter.

Employee's Response

Mr. Ramsay maintains he acted instinctively and was simply trying to prevent the theft, stating he reacted as any decent person would. He expressed frustration that his long years of dedicated service were disregarded during an eight-hour disciplinary hearing. He feels unfairly punished for attempting to do the right thing.

Financial and Emotional Impact

Following his dismissal, Mr. Ramsay, who earned £1,000 per month, is now unemployed for the first time in his life and reliant on benefits of £90 per week. He has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety and is struggling to financially support his elderly parents, with whom he lives.

Previous Incident and Concerns

Mr. Ramsay recounts a previous incident where he was physically assaulted by a customer at the Asda petrol station, sustaining injuries including a black eye, broken nose, and tooth. He believes attitudes have changed, with a decline in respect for retail workers and an increase in aggressive behavior, contributing to a growing shoplifting epidemic in the UK.
