A 25-year-old American man has died in Johnston Canyon within Banff National Park, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident, which occurred on Friday, is being investigated as an accidental death related to recreational activity.
Details of the Incident
Staff Sergeant Mike Buxton-Carr, commander of the Banff RCMP detachment, stated the man repeatedly disregarded safety barriers and entered the canyon’s pools. Witnesses reported he crossed barriers to access the pools several times before attempting a jump from a considerable height.
After the jump, the man briefly surfaced before struggling and disappearing underwater. Recovery efforts are underway, led by the RCMP and supported by Parks Canada.
Challenging Recovery Conditions
Corporal Mathew Howell, an RCMP spokesperson, confirmed on Sunday that the search for the man’s body continues. Parks Canada has been unable to deploy divers due to the canyon’s hazardous terrain.
Instead, underwater cameras are being used to aid the search, but strong currents from the spring melt are significantly reducing visibility.
Trail Closure and Safety Concerns
The Johnston Canyon trail network is closed to the public until further notice while recovery operations continue. This closure impacts a popular area for both residents and tourists.
Buxton-Carr emphasized the importance of adhering to designated pathways and respecting safety regulations within the park. The man’s decision to bypass barriers led to the tragic outcome.
Dangers of Johnston Canyon
The swift, cold-moving water in Johnston Canyon, especially during spring runoff, poses a substantial risk. The visible surface often hides powerful and unpredictable currents.
Parks Canada officials expressed condolences to the man’s family and reinforced the need for visitors to prioritize safety and follow guidelines. Barriers are in place to protect individuals from potential hazards.
The RCMP and Parks Canada are working to complete the recovery operation safely and are reviewing the incident to determine if additional safety measures are needed. The focus remains on supporting the man’s family and ensuring visitor safety.
