Thousands participated in the Travis Manion Foundation’s annual Manion WOD (Workout of the Day), a physically demanding event designed to honor the legacy of Marine Travis Manion.
Remembering Travis Manion
Travis Manion made the ultimate sacrifice in 2007 while saving his fellow Marines. The annual WOD serves as a tribute to his courage and commitment.
The Manion WOD Event
This year’s event, held near Arlington National Cemetery, attracted approximately 6,000 participants from 38 states. The workout consisted of a 400-meter run followed by 29 back squats, repeated seven times.
A Symbolic Repetition Count
The number 29 repetitions is a deliberate tribute to the date of Manion’s death – April 29th.
More Than Just a Workout
The Manion WOD is a deeply meaningful experience, fostering a sense of community, purpose, and remembrance among participants.
Music and Remembrance
A curated playlist featuring music Travis Manion listened to during his deployments provided a powerful connection to his memory.
Personal Connection to Service
Retired Marine Corps officer Carroll Harris, DC Chapter leader of the Travis Manion Foundation, emphasized the importance of continuing to serve with purpose. He has served 30 years in the Marines and experienced loss both in combat and beyond.
Living On Through Remembrance
Harris poignantly noted that there are two ways to die – physically and through being forgotten.
The Honor Project
The foundation’s Honor Project, taking place on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery, aims to combat this second form of death. Volunteers will visit the graves of fallen service members, ensuring their sacrifices are remembered.
A Lasting Legacy
Weighted bags with inspirational phrases were available during the Manion WOD, reinforcing the event’s message of strength and dedication to service. The Travis Manion Foundation’s work focuses on purposeful living, selfless service, and unwavering remembrance.
