Alaska Enhances Military Capabilities with New KC-135 Stratotankers

Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska has significantly bolstered its aerial refueling capabilities with the arrival of four additional KC-135 Stratotankers. This expansion represents a major achievement after a decade-long effort spearheaded by Senator Dan Sullivan to increase military support for Alaska’s growing strategic importance.

Increased Refueling Capacity and Personnel

The newly arrived aircraft will join the existing eight KC-135 tankers operated by the Alaska Air National Guard's 168th Wing at Eielson. This integration strengthens the base’s overall refueling capacity and enhances operational readiness. Approximately 200 additional Air Force personnel are expected to accompany the expansion, contributing to Alaska’s economic and strategic significance.

Senator Sullivan’s Decade-Long Advocacy

Senator Dan Sullivan, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, emphasized the essential nature of these augmented refueling assets. He highlighted Alaska’s increasingly critical role in U.S. operations across the Arctic and North Pacific. Sullivan persistently lobbied Pentagon and Air Force officials for years to increase refueling capacity to match the growth of Alaska’s advanced fighter fleet.

The addition of these tankers is particularly relevant given the evolving strategic landscape in the Arctic and North Pacific. Alaska now hosts over 100 fifth-generation fighters, including F-22s at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and F-35As at Eielson Air Force Base, increasing the need for robust refueling support.

Overcoming Delays and Demonstrating Commitment

The Air Force initially announced the plan to add four KC-135s in March 2021, with an expected arrival in fiscal year 2023. Senator Sullivan actively intervened to address delays, utilizing letters, phone calls, and committee hearings to ensure the commitment was fulfilled. He even placed a hold on the confirmation of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to underscore the importance of this initiative.
