OTTAWA – The move of Conservative MP Marilyn Gladue to the Liberal Party is creating significant upheaval within the Conservative caucus, CBC News reported Thursday.

Gladue's Transition and Liberal Response

Gladue addressed the Liberal caucus in Montreal, stating she looks forward to serving on the team “at this pivotal time.” She affirmed her intention to vote with the government and protect the rights and freedoms of women and LGBTQ+ individuals, despite past positions that appeared to conflict with Liberal values. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his decision to welcome Gladue, stating the party has core values and that individuals can come to support the party’s mission.

Some young Liberals expressed a cautious approach to Gladue’s arrival, while a former pollster for Trudeau suggested the Prime Minister is prioritizing securing a majority government, even if it means accepting MPs with differing past views.

Conservative Reaction and Leadership Concerns

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre responded to the defection by attributing it to Mark Carney, stating his leadership comes from the people of Canada. He dismissed the need for self-reflection, citing the 8.3 million Canadians who voted Conservative. The broadcast reported that morale is low within the Conservative caucus, with sources indicating some MPs have been approached to cross the floor. According to CBC News, two Liberal sources claim the party is in discussions with nine additional Conservative MPs about potentially defecting.

Commentators on the CBC broadcast questioned Poilievre’s leadership and his ability to maintain party unity. One commentator suggested it is an “untenable situation” if MPs are constantly considering crossing the floor. Despite the recent setbacks, including the resignation of Communications Director Katie Merrifield, Conservative sources indicated there is no current effort to oust Poilievre, as he received 87% support in a recent leadership review.
